About two months ago, Sony released their first look at their last-ditched effort at Marvel movies. The trailer for their Venom movie was…lackluster at best. I myself wasn’t even impressed and considering Tom Hardy is starring in it, I wanted to be more excited than I was. Sony’s take on the well-known anti-hero is running in association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although Tom Holland will not be appearing as Spider-Man, which seems strange to a lot of fans.

Having an MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) version of Spider-Man is great, but did we really need Sony to produce a film centering around the sometimes villain/sometimes anti-hero? Who cares! It features Tom Hardy himself as Eddie Brock and in the end, isn’t that enough to reel in fans? It’s enough to make us stop asking how does this movie in anyway associate itself with the MCU and Tom Holland’s Spidey?
In all seriousness though, with a new age of superhero films, we need a movie centered around someone unexpected. There have been a handful of Batman and Superman remakes. Spider-Man himself has had three live versions. It’s time for someone unexpected to make a splash. And considering Venom’s last big screen debut was in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 3, he needed some sprucing up.
