Marvel has been releasing a lot of trailers recently. Jessica Jones S2, Deadpool 2, Avengers: Infinity War, and Black Panther. All badass. The latest teaser to be released today was Sony’s Venom movie, starring Tom Hardy. Taking place, supposedly; within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’ve looked forward to seeing how the studio would pull off a film about the well-known symbiote. This morning we got our first look and it was…meh.
Having an MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) version of Spider-Man is great, but did we really need Sony to produce a film centering around the sometimes villain/sometimes anti-hero? Who cares! It features Tom Hardy himself as Eddie Brock and in the end, isn’t that enough to reel in fans? It’s enough to make us stop asking how does this movie in anyway associate itself with the MCU and Tom Holland’s Spidey?
In all seriousness though, with a new age of superhero films, we need a movie centered around someone unexpected. There have been a handful of Batman and Superman remakes. Spider-Man himself has had three live versions. It’s time for someone unexpected to make a splash. And considering Venom’s last big screen debut was in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man 3, he needed some sprucing up.
